When I ran the stock muffler with the spacer in, the backfire was very minor. When I started experimenting with less restrictive mufflers, the backfire became intolerable (I almost gave my neighbor's 15 year old dog a heart attack on shut off one night). Spacer is out, mixture screw adjusted, backfire almost completely gone. I'm glad it's not completely gone, as I enjoy firing off a shot once in a while :-) Part of the thumper mystique.
